**Arithmetic Questions and Answer with Solutions **

**1. The height of a right prism with a square base is 15 cm. If the total S.A. of the prism is 608 cm^2. Find the volume (in cm cubic) of the prism.**

(a) 480

(b) 460

(c) 1500

(d) 960

**Answer: D**

Sol. Total surface area of prism = Surface area + (base + top) area

608 = Perimeter of base × height + 2 × base area

608 = 4 × a × 15 + 2 × a × a

608 = 60 a + 2a^2

a^2 + 30a = 304

a(a + 30) = 304

a = 8 cm

Volume of prism = Base area × Height

**= 8 × 8 × 15 = 960 cm^3**

**2. The base of a right prism is a right-angled triangle whose sides are 5 cm, 12 cm and 13 cm. If the total surface area of the prism is 360 cm^2, then its height (in cm) is**

(a) 10

(b) 12

(c) 9

(d) 11

**Answer: A**

Sol. Perimeter of right triangle = (5 + 12 + 13) = 30

Total surface area = lateral surface area + 2 × area of base = (perimeter of base × height) + 2 × area of base

= (30 × height) + 2 × 1/2 × 5 × 12

= (30 × height) + 60

According to the question,

30 × height + 60 = 360 ====> 30 × height = 360 – 60 = 300

**Height = 10 cm**

**3. If the base of right prism remains same and the lateral edges are halved, then its volume will be reduced by**

(a) 33.33%

(b) 50%

(c) 25%

(d) 66%

**Answer: B**

Sol. Half of its lateral edges

⇒ Half of its edges

⇒ Half of its volume

**Then, The volume reduced by = 50%**

**4. A right prism has a triangular base whose sides are 13 cm, 20 cm and 21 cm, If the altitude of the prism is 9 cm, then its volume is**

(a) 1143 cm^3

(b) 1314 cm^3

(c) 1413 cm^3

(d) 1134 cm^3

**Answer: D**

Sol. Volume of prism = (area of base × height)

Area of base (i.e. area of triangle)

⇒ Area of base

= √(s(s-a)(s-b)(s-c) )

= (By Hero’s formula)

So, S = (13 + 20 + 21)/2=54/2 = 27

=√(27(27-13)(27-20)(27-21) )

=√(27×14×7×6)

=√(9×3×2×7×7×2×3)

⇒√(9×9×7×7×2×2)

= 9 × 7 × 2

Volume of Prism

= (9 × 7 × 2) × 9 = 1134 cm^3

**5. The distance between two stations, Delhi and Amritsar, is 450 km. A train starts at 4 p.m. from Delhi and moves towards Amritsar at an average speed of 60 km/hr. Another train starts from Amritsar at 3.20 p.m. and moves towards Delhi at an average speed of 80 km/hr. At what time will the both trains meet?**

(a) 5.30 p.m.

(b) 5.50 a.m.

(c) 6.50 p.m.

(d) 6.30 a.m.

**Answer: C**

Sol. Let first train also starts at 3 : 20 and add 40 km. to the total distance

Total distance = 490 km

Total speed = 140 km/hr

Total time =D/S=490/140 = 3.5 hr.

∴ They will meet at 3 : 20 p.m. + 3.5 hr.

**= 6 : 50 p.m.**

**6. A sum of Rs. 3115 is divided among A, B and C such that if Rs. 25, Rs. 28 and Rs. 52 be diminished from their shares respectively, the remainder shares shall be in the ratio of 8 : 15 : 20. Find the share of each.**

(a) Rs. 585, Rs. 1078, Rs. 1452

(b) Rs. 685, Rs. 1178, Rs. 1252

(c) Rs. 485, Rs. 1088, Rs.1352

(d) Rs. 785, Rs. 1378, Rs. 1652

**Answer: A**

Sol. The total sum after deduction

= 3115 - (25 + 28 + 52) = Rs. 3010

Their diminished share in the ratio 8 : 15 : 20

∴ A’s diminished share =8/43×3010

= 8 × 70 = Rs. 560

B’s diminished share =15/43×3010

= 15 × 70 = Rs. 1050

C’s diminished share =20/43×3010

= 20 × 70 = Rs. 1400

∴ A’s share = 560 + 25 = Rs. 585

B’s share = 1050 + 28 = Rs. 1078

C’s share = 1400 + 52 = Rs. 1452

**7. Two pipes A and B can separately fill a tank in 2 h and 3 h respectively. If both the pipes are opened simultaneously in the empty tank, then the tank will be filled in**

(a) 1 h 15 min

(b) 1 h 20 min

(c) 1 h 12 min

(d) 2 h 30 min

**Answer: C**

Sol. pipe A fills a tank in 1 h = 1/2

pipe B fills a tank in 1 h = 1/3

Both pipe can fill a tank in 1 h = 1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6

So, both pipe can fill an empty tank = 6/5 h = 1 h 12 min
